Furcellaria, gift from Baltic Sea !

The Baltic Algae, Furcellaria lumbricalis, is a well known algae grows in the sea of Baltic.  They grow well and survived on the rocks and stones.  Research shows some usage of this plant in cosmetics, topical cosmetics as added ingredient.

The algae, along with other algae, such as Fucus vesiculosus,  as well as other ingredient such as retinol, glaucine, CLA, caffeine had been patented as cosmetics product, having preventive effect upon cellulite development. Recent studies conducted by Oriflame Reseach Institute indicated a significant improvement in cellulite grading after 8 and 12 weeks. Through ultrasound imaging, it also exhibited a significant decrease in fat thickness compared with control treatment after 12 weeks.

During lipolysis assays, both F. vesiculosus and F. lumbricalis were capable of inducing intracellular triglyceride hydrolysis causing to the eventual release of free extracellular glycerol.  However, a synergistic effect in the increase of glycerol release was observed when the ingredients were combined together.  This discovery was surprising.  And the mechanisms of synergism remains unsolved at the moment.

Based on the discovery of the research, it is recommended to use F. lumbricalis-containing product to improve cellulite.  Massaging the skin can be helpful as well, as it accelerates blood flow and preventing fibrosclerosis.
